Celia Hart

Celia Hart is an English illustrator and printmaker, she spent her childhood in a village on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens. At school in Cambridge her love of art was encouraged and she went on to study at Cambridge Art School followed by a degree in Visual Communication at Brighton College of Art and Design.

After a career in publishing as a designer, art buyer and illustrator, ten years ago she decided to concentrate on her own work and returned to her love of block prints. She produces lino and woodcuts inspired by traditional printmaking techniques from Japan and China and the English tradition of the narrative print.

Celia’s work is inspired by the East Anglian countryside, she gathers ideas as she walks the footpaths near her studio in south-west Suffolk. Chance encounters with animals and birds in the fields and woods are worked into compositions in her mind then hastily scribbled down in her studio. The designs retain the lively lines of the original sketches but evolve and become distilled as they are carved into the block.
